Many dream of having doe eyes, but this vintage makeup, though classic, is not simple to master. Indeed, this sophisticated beauty look plays on contrasts and requires concentration to apply eyeliner. So, how do you create doe eyes? Here is our 5-step tutorial with lots of tips for achieving perfect doe eye makeup!
What is doe eye makeup?
Doe eyes is a makeup look that focuses on the upper part of the eye to enlarge the gaze. It was very popular with Brigitte Bardot and Audrey Hepburn, a trend from the 50s and 60s. Moreover, having doe eyes is an expression often used to compliment a woman with beautiful almond-shaped eyes, often synonymous with beauty and seduction. For this reason, some women sometimes resort to cosmetic surgery to transform their eyes.
But it's entirely possible to achieve very beautiful doe eyes without surgery!
As you'll see, the main goal of this makeup is to enlarge the eyes while giving them an almond shape.
It is sometimes advised, in terms of seduction, to have "doe eyes to attract a man". Certainly, this can be quite pleasant, but do it first for yourself before wanting to please anyone else. We can't tell you enough, the way you see yourself is the most important!
Step 1: Define the crease
The particularity of doe eye makeup is that it enlarges the eyes by bringing light and playing on contrasts. So, you must first add depth to your gaze.
That's why, for captivating doe eyes, makeup starts with the eyelids. Choose a creamy eyeshadow one shade darker than your skin tone. The eyeshadow shades the eyelid.
For successful doe eyes, emphasize the crease of the eyelid, like a cut crease if you're familiar with this eye makeup technique. To help you, you can use a blending brush that more easily fits this area of the eye.
Step 2: Add contrast to the eyelids
Then choose an eyeshadow or a colored eye pencil in a light color, to contrast with the eyeliner, or one that matches your eye color.
Tip: for evening makeup, prefer a color with a shimmery finish to make it more intense. While during the day, a matte color will make this makeup more subtle.

Apply them with your finger by taking a little product from the tip of the pencil. To further accentuate the contrast, apply the product to the center of the eyelid and blend lightly, stretching it towards the outer corner. Finally, dab a little on the inner corner of the eye, again to enlarge the gaze.
You can apply it to the inner waterline (but not for this look), as well as on the eyelids!
Step 3: Intensify the gaze
Now for the lower lash line. You can use our eye pencil mentioned above, as it has the advantage of staying put both on the inner waterline and on the eyelid.
Regarding the color, you can opt for a very dark brown, which softens and doesn't harden the gaze. However, you can also go for traditional black or even plum or navy blue.
Be generous and apply it along the entire inner length of the eye. And especially emphasize the outer corner to, again, elongate the gaze. Then lightly add some to the lower lid, under the eye, then blend the line with a small brush to blur and create a smoky effect.
Step 4: Enlarge the eyes with eyeliner
An essential step for doe eyes: applying eyeliner.
If you're a beginner, opt for a fairly fine felt-tip liner or a gel liner, which are easier to control for drawing a line. And if you want a more natural and blended result, then choose a pencil.
Apply the eyeliner following the curve of your eye, from the inside out, along the eyelid at the base of the upper lashes. Don't be afraid to have a fairly dense line, emphasizing the outer corner to elongate the gaze.
To create the wing, we recommend opening your eyes and looking straight ahead, then starting from the outside and working inwards to connect the two lines. You can create a straight line or a slight, long flick.
You can then thicken the line as you wish.
Step 5: Apply mascara for doe eye lashes
To achieve beautiful doe eyes, the lashes are the last essential piece to complete the look. They should be lengthened as much as possible, to complement the thick and intense eyeliner.
We recommend opting for a natural mascara that adds volume and length to the lash line. Apply one to three coats and especially to the outer lashes, as well as lightly to the lower lashes, to thicken everything. No need to be discreet with this type of makeup; the more visible it is, the more glamorous it is!
How to naturally get doe eyes?
Only makeup can modify the shape of the eyes to make them more almond-shaped. However, doe eyes are also characterized by long and full lashes, and for that, we have a few tips.
If you prefer natural doe eyes, meaning without makeup, you can use an eyelash curler. First, curl your lashes at the base by pressing for about ten seconds, then in the middle and at the tip. However, we recommend using it sparingly, as over time, it tends to damage the lashes. Moreover, lashes hold their curl for much less time than with mascara application.
Otherwise, daily, castor oil works wonders. This vegetable oil promotes and strengthens lashes, which is also an ingredient in our vegan mascara mentioned above! If you want to use it as a treatment, apply it nightly before bed, directly to the base of your lashes.
In general, choose a mascara that cares for your lashes and whose ingredients are not harsh, but rather nourishing.
Finally, a last piece of advice, more as a prevention: when removing makeup, be particularly gentle when removing makeup from this area. Go slowly, without back-and-forth movements, and preferably, remove mascara from the inside to the outside of the lashes.
